Minister for Defence, Stephen Smith, said the cyber threat to Australia was real, evolving and a growing test to the country’s national security establishment.

"It comes from a wide range of sources, and from adversaries possessing a broad range of skills," Smith said in a statement. "Cyber attacks are becoming increasingly more sophisticated and targeted. They are no longer confined to random acts of opportunism."

After a highly successful inaugural event in July 2011, that gathered over 150 senior Defence, National Security and Industry executives, ADM is pleased to announce its 2nd Cyber Security Summit on 31 May and 1 June 2012 in Canberra.

Increased cyber threats to Australia's national security

In a sign of the growing government acceptance of cyber attacks as genuine threats to national security, Australia will develop its first Cyber White Paper. Australia's strategic partner Britain announced 650 million ($AU1 billion) of extra funding for cyber defence in the Strategic, Defence and Security Review last year and took the threat to 'tier one' making it a top priority.

In the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation's (ASIO) 2010-11 Annual Report, the agency noted that espionage by cyber means was emerging as a serious and widespread concern.

In a sign of importance to Australian Defence Industry, Lockheed Martin has confirmed it will open its NexGen Cyber Innovation and Technology Centre (NCITE AU), in Canberra, in early 2012. LM are one of many leading Defence contractors who have begun investing serious resources into cyber security as more reports of breaches and threats dominate national security concerns.
