Pre-Conference Workshops

Wednesday 30th MAY 2012

9:00 - 12:30
WORKSHOP A
Applications of multi-level security domains for multi-agency information management

Drawing upon case studies which consider the challenges, risks and benefits of implementing a cross-security domain solution for multi-agency information sharing, both the cyber-security as well as 'need to know' vs 'need to share' issues come to the fore. As the Australian Government progresses towards a Whole of Government and Public Information Portal architectures across domains including Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and Air Traffic Management (ATM), the availability and reliability of information being made available both across agencies and to the public introduces new risks to producers, analysts and end-users.

Lead facilitator: Amanda Holt, General Manager, Defence Business, SYPAQ

1:30 - 4:00
WORKSHOP B
Securing Data Storage: Moving to the post PC era

Confidentiality of data has always been an important part of working within the defence industry, but are the methods used to secure data over the last few decades sufficient to secure data into the future? Starting with PC systems, this workshop will progress through embedded systems and portable storage, to detail common methods of securing digital data both in transit and at rest and examine if these will remain secure against bad actors of various levels of ophistication into the future. Information on the lowering cost of attack methods such as side channel analysis and physical attack vectors will be provided, and contrasted with their increasing sophistication.

The workshop will also discuss the various types of evaluation methodologies applied to secure products, and how to correctly interpret the output of these schemes. Where possible examples and case studies will be provided for context.

Lead facilitator: Andrew Jamieson, Technical Manager, Witham Laboratories
